Delaune’s Pharmacy Provides Palliative Care

Palliative care patients often need increased medical attention and frequently present a problem with conventional methods of drug administration. The primary goal of treatment for these patients is to keep them comfortable. Compounded preparations can be used to treat a variety of underlying conditions related to hospice care, palliative care, and wound care management. Patients in palliative or hospice care often have difficulty swallowing; therefore, other routes of administration must be used, and pharmacy compounding can help. Topical, rectal, and sublingual preparations can be used to help treat pain, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, and secretory issues.

Wound care can also become an issue for these patients, and depending on the pain and odor associated with the wound, treatment options will vary.

We know that palliative care can be very challenging, but our pharmacists take great pride in being able to work together with palliative care providers and those patients and families utilizing palliative care to ease the stress and discomfort as much as possible.
